American Idol – The Gals

I have to hurry and post this as I know Aunt Beck will be waiting my results LOL.

Vonzell – I wasn’t big on the song but she definitely has talent. Also a good perfomer and she has “the look”.
Amanda – Seemed a little pitchy to me tonight but not bad.
Janay – Rough time of it. Nervous and pitchy. Was not impressed.
Carrie – I love Carrie. I am a country fan and I love the purity of her voice. Powerful tonight.
Sarah – I like her voice and her charisma but not the song tonight.
Melinda – That was very brave of her trying a Celine song. I think a mistake. Too overdone. Made me wish I could hear Celine instead.
Nadia – Didn’t see her talent tonight. Bored by song. Definitely can perform though and the hair is too fun.
Celena – Love her. She has country star written all over her I think. Judges were bored but Jim and I are were not. Anxious to see what she can do.
Mikalah – Can you say Fran Dresscher? She is a cross between Fran and Minnie Driver:). I love this little chick. She has such a dynamite personality. She is going somewhere irregardless of this competition. She has amazing energy for one so young. Sadly, I don’t think she has the vocal talent that many others do but I hope she stays around awhile so that I can entertained by her sheer charisma.
Lindsey – I love her voice but I think she will need to step up her game. Wasn’t the song to showcase her talent.
Jessica – Seemed a little “off” tonight but, again, I like her.
Aloha – Full of personality for sure but I was bored by the song. She can sing but I don’t necessarily enjoy her voice.

Our pick for the night…..Jim and I struggled between Carrie and Celena but ultimately we would go with Celena tonight.

We would send Janay packing. I can honestly say though that I don’t feel “finished” watching the others so I would have a tough time saying who else I would say goodbye too.

I will say though that after tonights show, I really think a male will win this competition. The girls did a very good job but I enjoyed last nights collective performances more. If I had to chose between Celena and Joseph – I would go for Joseph.

Heidi?

P.S. Heidi and I usually have varying opinions and we have fun comparing notes because we usually judge things differently. That alone makes this fun to post LOL.

  1. grrr.. i just typed my replies person by person and lost them somehow.

i loved loved loved carrie – better than anyone else tonight – she has a truer voice and is so consistent. i’d love to see what celena can do as well but am pretty sure carrie will WAAAAAY outshine her.

honestly most of tonights performances did not do a THING for me. there were a few that had good stage presence but whose voices i wasn’t crazy about… but i could easily cut 1/2 the 12 tonight.

i’m one of the 50% who is way too annoyed by mikayla. her voice doesn’t do it for me and her personality / stage presence drives me crazy. simon was SO right about her – some will love that about her – but i was irritated as was jas.

aloha – friendly, lots of personality, happy person, but don’t care for her voice or performing style. she did remind me a lot of beyonce’ but as copy not the real deal – and since we already have a beyonce we don’t really need another one. this chic doesn’t stand up to her… and there is something about her style that just bothered me.. i didn’t like watching her at all. not crazy about her vocals.

nadia is unique, has a great look (maybe more like a model than singer), and is super comfortable on stage. impressive performer but not so impressive vocals. perhaps another song with more of a melody that stretched her a bit would be better for my tastes.

there was one in the last half – forget the name – who did a slow boring song – but had a nice sort of huskey voice – would like to hear more from her.

the celine song from melinda was a bad choice – i dont’ really want to hear her belting – try something softer and maybe i’d give her another week or two. others can outsing her at the end of the day though.

first 2 performances were unimpressive to me… the others fall somewhere in the middle but basically unimpressive.

i was on the same page with you in many regards but i think you were much nicer than i was when sitting here in my living room with my husband. of course, this is a public place and i don’t want to bash anyone – no way. i’m sure they would have plenty to say about my performing (dis)abilities if given the opportunity! ๐Ÿ™‚

i hope they all go far in life and have opportunites to have creative musical outlets whether it is a career move or not. i definitely favor carrie though – for sure.

  2. Lol! Isn’t it interesting how in our little little living rooms our opinions seem to blend with our husbands?

I really love Carrie too and I suspect that I will go back and forth between Carrie and Celena. I love Celena’s tone and quality – we’ll see if she can match Carrie’s power. I am certainely rooting for BOTH of them at the moment. Also funny that we disagree on the Mikaylah deal. Of all people who I would think would go nutty listening to her it would be me because I can’t stand to listen to Fran D. For some reason though, her charisma puts a smile on my face. I don’t see her carrying this too far though because most of the other girls can definitely out sing her. I bet she gets a tv spot somewhere:) As for whether or not I could cut 50%…I could based on my personal taste but based on their ability I think there is more talent this season than there was last season and I think some that I didn’t favor tonight still could have outsang some of last years top performers…thus my reluctance to boot them:). Don’t worry…the Simon in me will come out. Speaking of Simon, I agreed with him tonight for most of the performances AND totally with what he said about Mikaylah. Very very true statement. Are we having fun?

  3. I LOVED Carrie! She is by far the best of the night and I enjoyed her over any of the men. Her voice is so pure and she just goes out there and does her thing. That is so crucial on a show like this. It wasn’t something she was selling it was just pure beauty. I felt as if the rest of the contestents were there for looks or stage presence instead of voice. I really disliked the girl that they refered to as Beyonce. Her voice was not very strong and her dance moves/hip thrusts were driving me crazy!! I enjoy the girl with the husky voice, It may be Lindsay from her first audition but the song choice wasn’t great for her. Tonight should be a great show. I am with Heidi on the Fran girl….I am in the 50% that turned the channel over to Gilmore Girls because she was all show and didn’t have anything to back it up. However she is very cute, just not for American Idol.

  4. i like heather’s comments – well done! carrie wasn’t selling herself – she was just being.

as to a few others who i do think have vocal talent i think poor song choice and nerves really played a part in things. but they will HAVE to step it up for me not to consider them booted pretty quickly. there are only about 4 that i like to stay in as of last nights performances and only 1 of them did well enough vocally that i think she should be a new star – carrie.

as to mikayla – definitely think she is over the top – DEFINITELY. ๐Ÿ™‚ but i think it is who she actually is. i wouldn’t hang out with her because she would make my nerves too raw – but i think she’s probably genuine (based on what little i’ve seen of her – 2 or 3 times i think) – we just wouldn’t mesh. you may be right doni, she may just get a tv spot just for her look & personality – very unique.

as to booting 50% based on personal taste – i don’t feel the same for myself. i could boot 50% purely on vocal/stage performance… of course – it is my opinion and they don’t care what i think (unless i’m voting like mad and i’m not). my thoughts on who should be cut were based on my opinion of talent. doesn’t mean they can’t sing or perform (although i think that is true of some of them) – but that they could not survive in the music industry singing and performing – no way no how (not based on MY opinion of talent).

i’m anxious to see who gets booted and how things go next week. i hope they get some good advice on song choice and really shine so i can base my opinions on something different than i saw this week.

  5. Ok, I”m going to jump right in here. I love American Idol. However, after last night’s performances, I was pretty much asleep. I don’t really think it was the girls themselves, I think it was more the song choices. Yuck. If someone can’t keep my attention & keep me interested…well, maybe I’ll watch tonight. ๐Ÿ™‚

Is Carrie the blonde that sings mostly country? She is my all time favorite. What a pure voice & such a sweet girl. Second for me would be Celena. Beautiful girl, beautiful voice. I really love the girls that get up there & show their “true colors”. To me, Carrie & Celena both represent this. Now, as for “Fran” ….oh good heavens, give me the remote! I think she’s cute, but trying wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too hard. To me she is annoying & acting like a show-off. That said, think I’ll sign off now….LOL! ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Okay this is really gettin fun now! Heidi – curious about one thing – if you think that you could kick off 50% right now based on sheer talent, do you also think that last year’s competition had people in the top 10 (even top 5) who had NO business being there? I think even the worst of last night’s singers had more talent than last years group. And back to Carrie…I do really like Carrie but I have to admit that I don’t see her as phenomenal yet though she may grow to that. We’ll see. I should also mention that I love male voices and generally choose to listen to men over women so this factors into my opinion. I was bored with last nights performances even though I do think several of these girls are talented. The guys just way outshined them:). Every week it could be a different story though. AND if the rest of America reflects on last night’s show the way you gals are, then I think Mikaylah is a gonner:). Can’t help being attracted to her her little spirit. Can definitely see how she could drive a person nuts but I can’t help it…I love her.

  7. Carrie is my favorite as well. I also to like Nadia and her personality she was a lot of fun but a little pitchy. I agree with Doni on the men vs women. Right now I think the men have showed more talenet. Although my favorite is Mario…take care!

  8. oh just reel me in then reel me in some more doni! ๐Ÿ™‚ ha ha! i do think carrie is dynamic and here is why: look, personality, steadfastness in performance… she’s not pitchy (rarely anything off – though her voice is a little young – but it’s the kind of young that is already amazing and give her 1 year of constant singing and she will be amazing). she’s steady, she’s on pitch, she’s confident in who she is and what her style is (or so it seems) and i think she’ll be stretched to be even better in days to come.

actually all of them should be given lots of slack as they’ve probably never performed in this capacity before and it can be REALLY nerve-wracking or even downright scary. that affects the voice A LOT! especially if a song stretches your range or has belt it out parts. they will all improve as they are singing more now than they ever have in their lives – constant practice.

as to last year vs this year. i was VERY surprised last year at the top choices as i, like you, was not that impressed with some of the vocals. this year has a LOT of potential indeed – and yes, i think surpasses previous years. actually, the runners up the last few years haven’t really been favorites of mine. i am super impressed with kelly clarkson – her voice has grown immensely over time. as to clay? i was with simon on the cruise ship comments… actually i think mikayla fits that description for me too. ๐Ÿ™‚ i expect to see her singing on loveboat. ๐Ÿ™‚

now – as to tonights drop offs – i was not surprised at all for the guys particularly. well, the girls either though there is one girl i’m watching as i think she’ll go next week and i’d bet it was close this week – we’ll see if it happens.

  9. Girlfriend! Did I just hear you knockin Clay???? Come on now! He has a fabulous voice! I was incredibly saddened that he lost – he really didn’t though – he definitely gets more media attention even as runner up. And which girl are you expecting to go? I really think it should have been Janay.

  10. OH MY GOSH! YOU LIKE CLAY? oh wait – you liked the new star wars too… that is often our measuring stick in this house. ๐Ÿ™‚ hee hee… i agree that clay is talented and has a good solid voice but as to style – GAG ME! i really really think he sounds like he should be singing on a cruise ship and some of his mannerisms really irritate the daylights out of me. on one hand he’s a great performing and so slick with the audience/fans… but i just don’t like watching him or listening too him – cheesy.

    ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Heidi – I put money where my mouth is! I have his Christmas album and he is the only person at present I can stand to listen to performing “Mary Did You Know” (So tired of that song but Clay makes it fresh for me). (I also downloaded some of Jessica Simpson’s Christmas songs LOL – she drives me a bit nuts with over doing everything but I do enjoy some of her music).

P.S. Jim rewatched Troy just to see if we took crazy pills that day. He determined that we didn’t. He still didn’t like it. LOL.

  12. well, i love you dearly – jas does too, actually – we both love your family. but we’ve always known you were ALL a little weird.
    ;D

  13. Mikayla is just awful. Her voice is so irritating that it makes me think of fingernails on a chalkboard! I honestly can’t understand how she has made it so far. Not only is her voice annoying, but so is her over-the-top personality. Puuuhhhhleeeese! Thanks the Goddess, she was finally booted! I couldn’t bear to watch her again.
