Online Grocery Shopping

Wooohooo – happy day in my neighborhood for sure when the Safeway delivery guy arrived to CARRY IN my groceries and put them on my kitchen table.? NICE.? Thought I would share how this experience went in case grocery delivery is available in your area.

I hate to grocery shop.? It is miserable to shop with three small children and not any fun to spend my evening shopping while Dad watches kiddos either.? I decided to look into grocery delivery.? I figured it was too good to be true but turns out it was just GOOD and TRUE.

My neighborhood Safeway offers this service so I created an account at Safeway.com.

Pros:

  • As long as you create your account using Internet Explorer – it’s easy.? Apparently Safeway.com has trouble with other browsers like Firefox (I found this out the hard way).
  • Ordering process was simple.? You can shop by aisle, by category, type the product in and search, or use lists you have previously created to save time.
  • You can write notes to your personal shopper like “slightly under ripe bananas”.
  • If your order is $150.00 or more AND you allow for a 4 hour delivery window (the next day) instead of a 2 hour delivery window, the cost is ONLY $6.95!? WELL WELL WELL WORTH IT!
  • You save money because you don’t impulse buy and you can think through your cost since you are watching your tally grow.
  • You DO NOT tip the driver!? No added expense!? I talked to Safeway.com about this and they said that their drivers are not even allowed to accept tips.
  • The driver brings the groceries into the house for you!? YEAH!
  • Driver then gives you a detailed receipt and gives you notes from personal shopper if there were any adjustments that needed to be made.? You have the opportunity to not only write notes but to also say (at the end) if you are willing to allow for substitutions if the product or brand you want is not in stock.? I ordered $200.00 worth of groceries today and there were NO substitutions or changes necessary.? I got exactly what I asked for.

Cons:

  • Picking out meat may be a bit more difficult if you like to choose yourself.? In my case, I get meat from Sam’s Club so I didn’t order meat.
  • Produce is a little trickier because you need to know how many pounds you want so you have to learn that to tell them.
  • I am not sure that every single thing in store is available online because there were a few piddly products that I couldn’t find but for the most part, I didn’t have trouble. (They even picked out the right princess toothbrush for Tori). ? I would rather make a small list of grocery items to hand select and get the bulk this way.
  • Will take a little getting used to.? I am visual and even though they do give you the product picture, sometimes I need to hold an item and think about it and compare so visualizing size differences can be a bit tough.? Again, small price to pay though.

When the delivery guy showed up as scheduled and seamlessly put my groceries on my table, I was beaming with delight.? I will so pay the six bucks!? Wooohooo!

  1. That is awesome! I was wondering how that all worked. I am glad you looked into it so you don’t have to bother with shopping as much.

  2. When my kids were littler I took FULL advantage of this too!!! Our store was Coborn’s and they still do deliver out here if I want them too. Since I have to drive into town every Wednesday so the kids can go to Royal Rangers I have been doing my shopping while they are busy, but if that ever changes, I am soooo going to have them delivered again. I actually believe that my grocery costs were less by doing it for the same reason you noticed…no impulse buying! I am so glad that you found something that works great!

Have you used the click and pull feature at Sam’s Club? I use that too so as to avoid added costs too. I put the order in the day before and I pick up my order all shopped at the front door. I love saving money and time. Even with the few things that I am not sure about (like meat) I just run in and grab it even if I have used the click and pull.

What did our mom’s do without these awesome conveniences!?

  3. Just wait until you get coupons in the mail for FREE delivery!! It makes it even more worth it! I used Safeway’s delivery service a lot when I was pregnant and felt like GARBAGE. It was wonderful!!! So glad you gave it a try and that it was a success!!

  4. I love Safeway’s delivery. I use it quite frequently! I am not a fan of grocery shopping especially in this heat. Kuddos to you!
