AI Week 1 – The Girls

I am all about American Idol – 01 tonight – MANDISA! She really wowed me! There was some great talent displayed tonight and Jim and I were both excited about the season start! We also really love Katherine so we had a family conference with Daniel and Brooke and we decided each household will vote – 01 and 12!!!

Heidi – since you said you wrote a longer commentary, can you copy and paste it here?:)

Tomorrow is closing on the house! I am excited – but Tanner is not. He is really resisting this change and even had a cry session over this last night. He can’t articulate a reason but he does not think moving to a different house is a good idea. My mom asked me what I was going to do about this. I laughed:) What in the world can I do?????? LOL. He’ll get past it and love his new home (but last night he even used the word “hate” – he didn’t just dislike it – he actually hates it! Sheeeeshhhh!!)

  1. i’ll post it… meanwhile on tanner… poor little guy! i assume he’s been by and seen the new house? perhaps there is some way to make it special? well, if THIS will help you can tell him that i already have a little package ready for him with the NEW address (wanted to make sure the deal was all final before mailing) and that when he gets settled into his new wonderful BIGGER house (that is still so close to his family and old house where he can drive by to visit from the street.. ha ha … thinking of any helpful idea i can) that he will have a very fun package coming from his aunt heidi jo… that he has to be in the new house to get it though. do you think that will help AT ALL???? (it actually was a pretty small package but i think i’ll beef it up if it will help the little darling!)

  2. ok – here are some of my initial thoughts… i’m sure it’s not perfectly thought out but a good general idea. i was thinking about who would be in top 6 when i chose my favorites – but i too am LOVING mandisa and katherine.

i’m anxious for the list to narrow down some so it will be easier to remember who/what/why on it all. ๐Ÿ™‚ (sidenote – disclaimer – something was wrong with the sound on the ai station tonight in my town – it was very distorted so i could not hear nearly as clearly as i hoped to on some of the songs… SO disappointing. it could have affected my opinion too.. but i think
in general i will feel the same if i’d heard it clearly)

Mandisa – they said she “threw the gauntlet down!” and they were right! she was hot stuff and really showed versatility, ability, stage-presence. she’s just a downright doll.

kelly pickler – i still love this girl. she should NOT be cut this week. she’s very likable and has a great voice i think will grow better with time. not a perfect performance but very good and full of heart. i just LIKE this girl so much – i want her to have a chance at this.

becky odonahue – a beautiful girl but her voice doesn’t impact me a lot. she sang strong but i didn’t think it was especially pretty – she and her sister should be models though! ๐Ÿ™‚

ayla brown – another girl i like who has a nice voice but can’t stand up to some of her amazing competitors. she’s successful in sports so singing doesn’t have to be her career – nice versatility in talent… but not my fav.

paris – ok, what can you possibly say? amazing, a natural, hot performance, stage-presence galore – she BOUGHT that stage – stole it right away from whoever thought they owned the deed. this girl is BORN to do this naturally. even if her style isn’t your top
choice, there just is no denying the talent in that adorable and right on package. i loved her.

stevie scott – yup, i agree with randy and simon – she blew it. she did not choose a song that showed her vocal strength at all. which
surprises me – i’d have thought she’d do ok on it – maybe she’s only strong as a high soprano. she may be out this week due to her choice (and the TOUGH competition)

brenna – ugggh… she could have done better showing that softer side but it was not great vocally until the end – seems all or nothing for her to be above average with vocals (in my “humble” opinion – ha ha!). still i can’t STAND her attitude… i don’t want her rewarded for it. i hope she is NOT in the top 6.

heather cox – cute girl – like the throaty sound in her voice but don’t see her standing up the competition through to the top 6. could be viewed as average – esp compared to others. possible she’ll make it this week.

(i know i keep saying “compared to her competition” but i just don’t think there is any way to avoid that this year! there are some
AWESOME singers and you’d better stand out if you are going to stand by them for long!)

melissa mcgee – again, hearty, throaty, i liked her in general. she sounded VERY much like faith hill i thought. she had some off
notes, for sure, but with seasoning could possibly come out of that (hey, faith singing live is not always right on in pitch but i sure
like her too! sooo…perhaps she’ll overcome it too). she’s strong. should NOT be cut this week at least.

lisa tucker – another young natural. paula’s word “poised” was right on – a great performer, great showmanship, natural on stage
(as if she’s been there for years and years and years)… would have liked to have heard more range in the melody line of the song she
chose – wish she’d have changed it up a bit. she’s adorable too.

kinnik – i like her – but the judges are right – she got outshined by the other younger ones. she was a little pitchy but might
overcome that – she was still very good and had good showmanship. i did think at first that her performance was “affected” by the
original – by that i mean more copy of original in her voice than simply singing from her own voice… got better but i wished for
more range in her performance too.

katherine mcfee – SHE BROUGHT IT! she did an excellent job – definitely in my top pics. she’s one to watch for in top 6!

    to nutshell it:

my favorites tonight were mandisa, kelly, paris, lisa tucker, & katherine…. seconds were melissa & kinnik.

i can do without becky and brenna this week… if stevie goes it won’t hurt my heart too much based on tonight’s performance – though
if she has another shot i’d like to see if she can really find her own place in classical – i don’t remember enough of her earlier performances to make a call at this point so based on tonight, i’d
say i’m ok if she leaves this week or next.

(ok – another disclaimer – i always feel a little bad giving a public critique about these singers – “AS IF you think you’re better?” is what i’d imagine i’d hear in return. i for one know that i would no doubt have been outsung. ๐Ÿ™‚ so, this is just for fun – i think they all have made it very far in this competition for a reason and deserve pats on the back and moments of sheer joy for their accomplishments. none of my more critical comments should take away from what a wonderful accomplishment they’ve made by making it to where they are – they’ve all done a great job.)

  3. Obviously you didn’t have a family conference with the rest of us – your mom, Grammy and me!!!! We liked: Ayla, Paris (adorable), Lisa and Katherine. Just thought I’d add our picks!!!!

  4. Well, thus far I’ve seen 3 guys sing. I’ve seen enough…haha! I just have to disagree with Randy – I really don’t see a guy winning this year! Unless it’s the unique gray haired guy (forgot his name) – I think he’s awesome! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Moving!!! WAHOOO!!! I am just getting a chance to catch up on AI. I have it tivoed and have been itching to watch it! So I will let you know what I think later. I hope the moving goes well and I will be saying prayers for you all. Especially Tanner. Would sending a postcard from Minnesota to the new address help? If you think it will just let me know!

  6. AI RESULTS NIGHT (spoiler warning!)

none of the choices surprise me in the longrun… but i wasn’t sure
we’d lose becky and patrick so soon

  7. ok, after a grace update from Heidi…I know you are busy, busy, busy and don’t even have the computer hooked up…..but! I CAN’T STAND IT! Is this my lesson in patience for the month? PICTURES DONI! WE WANT PICTURES!

  8. LOL…. ๐Ÿ™‚ Jennifer that is too funny!
I second that! I was thinking about you this morning and trying to imagine putting a house together with 2 very active boys! I too check often to see if there’s pictures, or an I’m alive update or SOMETHING!
I’m sure all your “followers’ are praying for things to go smoothly right now. Hope your just enjoying your gift! God Bless!

  9. i spoke to doni the other day ladies – she is alive and well. ๐Ÿ™‚ hee hee… i just managed to sneak in a call.. she was surrounded by paint and the help of her wonderful mother-in-love to get the house beautified and ready for the rest of the furniture (esp boys rooms) to get put up. she is LOVING her house. funny thing – she has the exact same layout of house that my parents had before they moved from arizona. it is an awesome layout – perfect for raising babies. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. I’m going through Doni withdrawls too! Thank you Heidi for keeping us updated! I think we would all go totally nuts if you didn’t! J/K Glad to hear that she’s loving the house. I hope the getting settled in process is going well for the Brinkman family.

  11. I was just thinking, I wonder how many e-mails you are going to have once you get your computer up and running…hmmm.
