All the Better To See You With…

Ty’s visit to his opthamologist was long overdue and now I feel bad that I didn’t get him back in sooner.?? It seems that his right brain is taking over for his left and he is losing vision in the left eye.?? It isn’t “terrible” right now but the Dr. said that if this keeps up, he may eventually lose vision in the left eye.?? I was pretty shocked to find out that we will need to patch his right eye for 2 to 3 hours a day until he is NINE OR TEN years old!?? Good gracious that is long!?? He is not enjoying it and poor baby asks me every 5 minutes if patch time is over but he is at least obedient about it.?? We were using sticky patches but now that I have his glasses in (yes he now needs to wear glasses full time), I bought over the lens patches.?? He is not acclimating to the glasses real well yet so I am limiting his day use trying to build up the time.?? I had hoped that if he could see better with them that he would like them but he says they hurt.?? Is the prescription wrong??? Are they giving him headaches??? Is it just a “getting used to it” thing??? Time will tell I guess.

Do you know one stinking pair of glasses was about 250.00 and that was WITH insurance?!!!?? The total cost would have been over 500.00 without it!?? I did buy upgraded Nike flexible frames, transitional lenses, and anti reflective so that of course boosts the cost but still…?? He looks pretty adorable in them don’t you agree?????

Notes for Mom:

Appointment was on 4-7-08

Prescription:

Right: (Sphere) +0.50; (Cylinder) +0.50; (Axis) 90
Left:???? (Sphere) +2.00; (Cylinder) +0.75; (Axis) 90

  1. Poor baby, that has got to be a hard transition for him. But he does look oh so adorable in his glasses:) Love you Ty!

  2. Ty you look so handsome in your new glasses. 🙂 I wish him well with it all. It must be hard for him, poor little guy.

It sure is amazing how much glasses cost. Thts probably why I have not gone to get new ones yet, but I need to.

  3. What a cutie! The “hurt” he is speaking of is probably a “just getting used to them” phase. Sometimes wearing glasses (if you have never before) causes the tops of your ears to become very sensitive until you get used to them.

And I feel your pain on the cost, mine are just as expensive!!

  4. He looks adorable!!!! I had the same problem as a kid! They patched me for whole days at a time for about 2 years and finallly my lazy eye quit being so stinking lazy! It wasn’t fun, but it worked, so that is a huge bonus for me now as an adult having no problems with that.

  5. He DOES look adorable!!!! That’s probably one of the cutest pictures of Ty I’ve ever seen!!

  6. Ty, you look very handsome in your new glasses.
Doni, Ty is probably just not used to the glasses yet. I was born with my left eye ‘lazy’. In reality you couldn’t even see my pupil as it was pointing all the way down into the socket. I had to be patched full days every other day so that my left eye would start compensating for the loss of my right eye and slowly move up. Anyway point is… Even though I had glasses from birth until I was in school I could not stand my glasses. I would complain of them hurting my ears since the skin is so sensitive there. Eventually I got used to them and stopped the complaining.

  7. gosh he DOES look sooooooo cute!!!!!!!!! i’m not used to his hair so short but the spikey doo with the new frames just makes him SO grown up! gosh time is flying… so glad you got this taken care of.

  8. He does look very cute 🙂 and I might add his mommy has great taste in glasses (Sam has the same ones and even the same style over the lens patch. Although I believe Sam’s is a train) If you need any more cloth patches let me know, we have a couple. Sam is wearing his glasses for school/reading but if he doesn’t ‘need them’ he doesn’t wear them.

  9. He looks great with them!
We’ve been patching Nate’s right eye for two years now… started at 3 hours a day.. went to 6 hours a day at one point.. then back to 2 now we are back to 3 hours a day.. BUT his left eye has made improvement in that time… when we started out.. his vision WITH his glasses was 20/160 in his left eye! Two years later his vision WITH his glasses in his left eye is now 20/60! So it has helped him. We drive to Oklahoma City every 6-8 weeks for a check up.
To get him used to the patching.. we let him do activities he LOVED and would do for a long time to get him used to it… he was younger than Ty though at the time.. so putting him in a high chair and letting him watch a movie for an hour, then giving him markers or paint to get him busy was easy!

    Good luck!
