Get Plunked

*This is a break in our regular scheduled programming – posts of Tanner will return tomorrow – same time – same place.*

My friend Kristi bit the bullet.?? No longer willing to bow to the mainstream of flat iron users, she boldy embraced her naturally curly hair.?? And yes…she knows that every curly haired American Idol contestant gets the curls straightened by the time they hit the top 20 but sometimes you just have to take a stand against the media and choose to be a non-conformist tossing the opinion of naysayers aside.

I love Kristi’s new do.???? I was instantly envious of her luscious locks.?? In fact, for years now the hairstyle I have most wanted was Kate’s from Lost.?? (If you don’t know who I am talking about, come out from under your rock ;).???? The problem??? I scream the same thing into the mirror that likely many of you do.?? “JUST DO SOMETHING!?? BE STRAIGHT OR CURLY BUT DANG IT NOT BOTH!?? PICK ONE!”?????? To get straight hair, I must flat iron lest I get a terrible case of frizz.?? To go natural would send the frizz loose and I had no idea how to tame it.

I used to tell people that I had straight hair but that wasn’t really true.?? Then I said “Well it’s straight but it has a lot of body in it”.?? That progressed to “Okay my hair is NOT straight – it has a lot of wave in it but it isn’t curly”.?? And finally “My hair is curly but not curly enough be useful so I have to fry the heck out of it to teach it a lesson in submission.”?? Yes my hair does smoke once in awhile but I have chosen to live with that unfortunate side effect.

Last week I was having a playdate at Kristi’s and we did what all SAHMs of three want to do on playdates.?? We started playing with girl stuff and decided to do hair – mine.?? :)?? As we discussed Kristi’s camp switch, I learned quickly that the chic had done her homework.?? She was losing me in so many product details, research, steps and styles, I could hardly think straight.???? Turns out, Kristi (in true Kristi fashion), spent six weeks researching natural curling methods before she ever attempted on herself.???? After her lengthy (and interesting explanation), I had to know.?? Wouldn’t you??? So off to the sink we went to find out just how curly my hair really is.?? When she was done I was stunned.???? Who was the curly haired woman staring back at me????? I had long since given up trying to tame my locks so I had no idea what curl was really there.

Anxious to see what Jim would think, I hurried home to get ready for a double date night with Tom and Kristi (an all too rare treat).?? :)?? He said he preferred my hair straight but as the evening wore on, he admitted the curls were growing on him.?? :)?? Sweetie was shocked that I had not “curled” my hair and that the style I was sporting was pure natural.

Figuring this may interest a few, and just for the sheer fun of it, Kristi agreed to be my guest blogger today.???? Following is her tutorial explaining how to “Get Plunked”.?? :)?? Enjoy.
