First Day of School 2012

Morning Funny…

Forgive me for this bit of potty humor but this was too cute to resist.?? This morning, at the breakfast table, Ty was tooting a bit.?? A few moments later, Jim says “Ty you look really tired today.?? I don’t think you are completely awake yet.”???? Tori follows that up with “I think he ran out of gas.”

We laughed so hard.?? She said that in her typical Tori serious tone.?? I have no idea if she was trying to be witty or if that was just an ironic comment though I have never heard her use that expression for “lack of energy” before so I have no idea where that came from.?? The timing couldn’t have been more apropo.?? Hilarious.

This year Tanner is in the sixth grade and Ty is in the third grade. They each have 10 subjects a piece so wish me luck. Tori is insisting that she is in school too so we have her little preschool projects lined up. I would love to say that everyone was excited for school but the boys have wizened up to that concept. Tori thinks it’s pretty great at least. I am actually anxious to start back to because after a month off, I need my schedule back. I am also looking forward to it because, as of this weekend, I finally have arranged things to suit our needs better and that is motivating all by itself.

It seems I have been watching a little bit too much of HGTV’s Love It or List It this summer. I have been going round and round trying to figure out how to address some space issues. There are two main problems bugging me. First, I want a beautiful master bedroom. In almost 18 years of marriage (on the 16th by the way), I have not had a bedroom set. Not even a bed frame. No kidding. Every other room has been addressed EXCEPT mine. I would like that to change. Problem has been, I didn’t want to devote time or money to it because as long as it had to be multi-functional and include my office, I didn’t think I could pull off “beautiful” anyhow.

The second issue is school. In the beginning, Jim added a nice long row of home school cabinets in my kitchen and the kids and I did school at the breakfast table. In the last two years, that plan has gone awry. Because the boys use the computer for so much of their school work, we start out in the kitchen together but quickly are headed to my bedroom where the computers are. End result? Five people in my bedroom a good portion of the day. NOT an ideal environment for any of us. I have come to HATE my bedroom. When I am done with school, I am often working on business stuff so it makes me feel like I live in that room. The kids like to be with me and we have a large screen tv in there so between computer, Troy and Tori’s toys, and TV, we live in, essentially, one bedroom. I needed this to change.

The HGTV show inspired me to think out of the box. I kept coming up with ideas only to be shot down by you know who. One fine day I came up with a plan that I really believed to be workable and I didn’t want Jim to discount it before I could make my case. I waited until he left for the movies with his friend and then I set my plan in motion. I moved all the furniture in the front room and used duct tape to mark where I thought the office should go. I wanted to purchase additional pieces so I had to lay it all out and demonstrates the measurements would work.

When Jim came in the door, I told him I would move it all back if he didn’t like it but I just needed him to look! He carefully evaluated for about 20 minutes and then he went and ordered my furniture. Wooohooo!

I really love how it all came out. My bedroom can now get a much needed update (maybe next year?) and now I have a dedicated office and home school area. I had to give up the formal dining area but you have to give to get right? It was an easy thing to sacrifice. Here is my new Formal Living area and Office/Home School area:

Note to my tribe: Jim found Troy’s glasses in my office trash can. I don’t that was coincidental knowing my smart boy hee hee.

  1. Doni…it looks AMAZING!!!!! Yea for an awesome office/school room!! I can hear the keyboards clicking and the books being opened!! 😉 Here is to an amazing school year!!! xoxo

  2. WOW, this looks amazing!!!! You totally affirmed why I wanted to have separate rooms for all our activities so we wouldn’t hate any one room. I used to have my office in my bedroom back in the apartment we lived in and I hated the lost master bedroom. Love that your family is back up in open spaces and you get your bedroom back. Can’t wait to see what that turns out like!
