NOW WHAT?

Sometimes in life the unexpected happens and you can’t really be prepared for it.?? I didn’t predict this “problem” and I am not quite sure what to do about it.

Yesterday was Day 1 of potty training.?? All morning and afternoon we made a million trips to the potty all to no avail.?? Last night at about 8:00 PM, Ty really wanted M&Ms and wanted to “try” again.?? Much to his surprise (you should have seen his deer in the headlight expression), a little bit trickled out!?? THAT counted so he got M&Ms!?? Thinking that was tooooo cool, he wanted to try again.?? Ready for the shocking part?

Over the next hour and 20 minutes, Ty went potty ELEVEN TIMES!!!!?? I had to reward him ELEVEN TIMES!!!!?? Once he had success, he just KNEW he could do it and would patiently wait for it (which also meant I was being interuppted from LOST over and over and Jim and Tanner and I were trading off).??

When I was in the bathroom, he would make me sit on the counter and look at the door.?? LOL!?? Shy bladder??? I would get impatient (my good show was being interuppted too many times) and he would say “just a minute mommy I can do it”.?? At one point I said, “Honey let’s come back in a few minutes.”?? He answers “I’ll just wait the four minutes in here”.?? Sheeeshh!?? Ty is actually quite patient.??

So how much did he go all eleven times??? I would say about 1 Tablespoon, maybe 2??or more each time.?? I didn’t notice he was drinking THAT much either.??

How is it possible that he could go 11 times in an hour and a half???Here are my ideas:

1.?? He really did need to go but his nervous excitement made him stop/start and never finish??? It didn’t seem like that though.

2.?? He KNOWS how to stop/start and just wanted more M&Ms? :).?? Many ADULTS can’t do that??so I really doubt that to be the case.

3.?? Does Ty have a bladder problem that is just now coming to light??? Does he always go over a??period of time in just tiny amounts??? I mentioned this to Jim and he started laughing at me thinking I ALWAYS find something to worry about.?? But this IS weird don’t you think?

4.?? I am sure there is an option 4 but I can’t guess what it is.

So this morning he woke up and wanted to go potty right away.?? He went a small amount two times within 10 minutes and then has had many unsuccesful attempts every since and it is now 1:00.?? Today’s issue is that he wants to stay in the bathroom.?? He wanted me to eat my lunch in there (gross), he wanted me to do Tanner’s schoolwork there, he even suggested we just play with his little computer on the bathroom floor and just “wait” for it.?? :).?? I never dreamed that “I” would be begging to get out of the bathroom!?? I called Sweetie and asked if she wanted to “potty sit” awhile so I could finish school.?? She “conveniently” had other plans.?? Go figure.

Break in typing – back to the bathroom “he just said he doesn’t want to go number 2 he wants to go number 6”.?? ๐Ÿ™‚

I won’t “worry” about the 11 times thing yet but if he continues to do this, I will be.?? Is there some type of bladder problem that causes a person to only go in small amounts over a period of time (other than a bladder infection which I am sure he doesn’t have)?

Anyone ever have this happen while potty training??? I can’t decide if it is good news or bad news.?? He WAS very excited yesterday and for awhile, he was convinced he could go on command to earn whatever snack he desired.?? To this he said, “I LOVE going potty!”?? ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. What a big boy. So proud of you Ty. O.k., now Doni, not to little your “maybe worry”, but I think I just might have to side with Jim for now. You are right though, if it continues it might be worth looking into.
I think your little guy is excited and is tickled by the attention from you and his brother, and he must feel a great sence of accomplishment.
I have potty trained four of my kids and am apporching the end of training Ryan, all I can say is every child is differant. My oldest was so scared of the potty that we had to buy him a toddler potty. My two girls took only a couple of weeks. Jacob took many, many months, I think a longer round from him being sick on and off. Landen….FORGET IT, Ryan seems to be having no problem, except for going number one where ever and whnever he wants. (to many funny stories behind that statement)
I am just so amazed you have hit this stage, it must be a awesome feeling for you also.
Have you tried allowing him to go potty by himself? Does he need you in the bathroom? Maybe you could stand just outside the door in order to hear him going. I know KyLeigh had a shy bladder but I was worried she would not go without me in the bathroom with her, so I invested into some color tablets. The tablets made it possible for me to not be in the bathroom, but for me to know if she had gone or not.

  2. Both my boys did the same thing when they were potty training if that brings you any comfort. Jacob only did it for a few days but Joshua did it for a few months. (Doesn’t make leaving the house very fun). ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. oh doni! this is so super super exciting! but yes i’m laughing at the idea that you can’t leave the bathroom! HEY – AT LEAST THE MASTER BATHROOM IS REALLY BIG AND NICE – COULD USE THAT ONE IF YOU MUST! ๐Ÿ™‚

have you ever let ty sit to go potty? I wonder if just changing positions would help him to relax a little bit?

oh my… go ty – go ty!

  4. I have two girls (only one potty trained), but my oldest did this same thing. As she got farther along in the process, she started going to the potty less frequently and there was more pee at one time. I guess I figured it was part of the physical maturing process and muscle control. My youngest who is still in diapers seems to already only go a couple of times a day and she can wet a completely dry diaper all the way through in minutes. *shrug* Who knows.

  5. So excited for you and for Ty! What a big boy he is getting to be! I wouldn’t worry at this point about how frequently he was going to the bathroom. Now, if it’s a few months down the road and it’s still happening, then I’d probably be a little concerned.

Good luck with getting anything done outside of the bathroom! I know Kylie just wanted to sit on the toilet and read books all day! At least that’s the part I remember of it!

  6. ps – i love that tanner, the big responsible brother, is part of the helping process… he’s got to be a great moderator! ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Karsyn is doing the same thing with potty training. The first day it took the entire day for her to go, and after three weeks I am convinced that she still is not emptying her bladder every time that we go. I think that it is just something that they have to learn how to get used too. Just like you though I was worried that she had a uti or bladder infection and needed to go to the doctor. Then I talked to Jen and Kennedy is doing the same thing. So just put some books in the bathroom and wait :).

  8. Zane did the exact same thing too when he was first interested in potty training. Now he is finally emptying it all out! I wouldn’t be surprised though if Ty figured out how he could get more M&M’s…he is too smart!
Keep up the good work mommy, I know it is frustrating!

  9. You ladies are helping me feel better!!! I feel like this is the first time I have had to potty train because Tanner trained himself with no work involved on my part. He was FULLY potty trained (even nights) within about a week or so and I have never had an accident problem (once in a great while only). Ty keeps saying “I LOVE to go potty!” ๐Ÿ™‚ I, however, have seen a little too much of that Ducky bathroom the last three days.

  10. My understanding is that when children wear diapers, they only urinate the amount needed at that moment. Which means many never fully empty their bladder. So, part of the training process is teaching them to hold it all and then void it all empty. That’s why with babies you have to change their diapers every 30 minutes sometimes, and toddlers you can change it every couple of hours. They are always learning to hold more and void more at a time. So, the first couple of days of going to the potty will be more frequent, until he learns that he still has more in there to get out. Except…the M&Ms are a good incentive to not worry about that!! : ) I think even with the candy, it will get less frequent over the next week. Eventually the bathroom will get boring too. Have fun! That’s great!

  11. I was just telling my husband that maybe Weston has bladder issues! I had a friend call it the potty tour of the World. He’s been potty trained almost a year and still goes all the time. We go before we leave somewhere, when we get there, and when we get home. A four and half hour trip to Dallas takes us six hours b/c we are stopping so much to let him potty! (that’s probably b/c he’s bored) He peepee’s all the time all day long. But he recently started being able to sleep all night in underwear so I guess he’s just getting it all out during the day. I think I will bring it up to the Dr. but he hasn’t run random fever or say it hurts when he is going. Who knows. Is this just a boy thing??
Oh and I wish Weston would have a little more of “shy bladder” He doesn’t care who when or where!

  12. so from what you saw…what did you think of LOST!??? (Sorry can’t comment on the potty training portion of this thread yet… haha)
